Happy New Year Gems! Welcome back to another blog post.

I hope you guys had a great holiday season with some time to rest and reflect on this past year. Considering that 2020 has been quite an interesting year, I expect this time of meditation has helped you recharge and reset for 2021. Besides, this is the time a lot of us start thinking about our new year’s resolutions. Along with, how we plan on making this year more productive than the last.

From my end, it was important for me to take a break and re-align myself with my purpose and my goals. Moreover, working full-time at a financial institution does not always allow me to be as consistent as I would like, with my blog. But, where there is a will, there is a way. Having said that, I am back to share with you, how I’m approaching my 2021 new year’s resolution.

I am entering this year with the same resolution I’ve had for a while now. CONSISTENCY. I figured, no matter the goals I set for 2021. I want to take consistent actions towards achieving them. Likewise, my approach to creating my 2021 resolution begins with reflecting on the past year. From my perspective, it is important to acknowledge your did wells and progresses made from the previous year. This allows you to build the confidence necessary when it’s time to set new goals.

The struggle with being consistent

When it comes to being consistent, it is one of my biggest struggles. Significantly, consistency is the key to progressing in all areas of life. If I can generalize, we are all guilty of consistently starting something new, whether it is a new hair regimen, skincare regimen, or a new diet. Our initial thrill and efforts gradually fade before we can see any real results. This cycle is extremely frustrating and makes us unmotivated and unproductive. Meanwhile, we always find the motivation to start something new. Again!

Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, It comes from what you do CONSISTENTLY

My approach to becoming more consistent:

As we all know, the struggle with being consistent is real. Therefore, here is my approach to keep you/me going after the initial hype of starting something new. This is something I encourage you all to work on throughout the year. Your goals should be revisited every month if not every week.

Set Intentions

Before you set your goals, ask yourself the following:

  • What do I want to achieve or improve on?
  • Why I’m I trying to achieve said goals? (ex: I want to be financially free)
  • How I’m I going to achieve these goals? What is the action plan?

Commit, Focus & Refine

Once you’ve set your intentions, be realistic about your long and short-term goals. Further, set achievable objectives by:

  • Committing to your goals and dedicating time. Motivated or not, do it anyways.
  • Focusing on one objective at a time.
  • Refine your action plan. Go over what is working and what isn’t. Readjust if needed.

Acknowledgement

  • Acknowledge what you already have and be grateful for it all.
  • Acknowledge your progress. Be proud of how far you’ve come and what you were able to accomplish.
  • Acknowledge your lack of consistency but don’t beat yourself up, forgive yourself and keep it pushing.

Whether it is self-development, starting a business or simply focusing on your physical or mental health. The 1st step in setting a new year’s resolution or any kind of goal is to be intentional. Commit time to be able to achieve your goals and make it a habit. Additionally, don’t forget to celebrate your progress. However small it may seem to you. This gives you a sense of closure, helps you check things off your list, and encourages you to keep moving forward. Furthermore, forgive yourself for slacking but, always make sure to get back to the purpose. (*note to self). Lastly, compare yourself to who you were yesterday. The fact is, we are all aspiring to reach our highest potential.

I am in competition with no one. I have no desire to play the game of being better than anyone. I’m simply trying to be better than who I was yesterday
