With the increase of interest in natural beauty products, fermented rice water has been the new craze in recent years, for people trying to obtain longer and healthier hair. Yao women of Asia bathe in rice water, this century-old gem has been their secret to healthy hair and skin.
These women are known to have floor-length hair (as long as 6 feet (1.83 m)). It is also said that their hair keeps its dark, rich, and shiny color with the use of rice water. In addition, they only begin to gray around their 80s.
This blog post is going to be about the benefits of rice water for your hair and skin and how to make/use it.
Benefits of Rice Water for Hair & Skin
Rice water is the cloudy white liquid leftover after boiling, washing, or soaking rice. Further, It is said to contain the following:
- 8 amino acids:
- B vitamins:
- Vitamin C:
- Vitamin E:
- Antioxidants:
- Inositol: a carbohydrate, which repairs damaged hair.
The endless benefits of rice water include improvements in hair elasticity, repairing damaged hair, decreasing hair breakage, adding volume and luster to your hair, and making hair more manageable.
When it comes to the skin, fermented rice water is believed to tighten and brighten the skin, minimize the appearance of pores, and reduce fine lines leaving you with smoother and even skin.
Now, let’s get to the next step on how you make this bad boy!
Fermented Rice Water
There are many ways to make rice water. I prefer the fermentation method because the nutrients are far more enhanced and potent when fermented.
STEPS:
1. Rinse one cup of rice water.
2. Place it in a bowl and cover for a few hours up to 24H. (the longer the fermentation processes the more potent the rice water)
3. Strain and pour it into a bowl/container.
4. Dilute with water depending on the desired potency. (Optional)
How to use rice water for hair and skin
HAIR
What you will need:
- ¾ cup rice water
- ¼ cup of Aloe Vera juice
- A few drops of Mint essential oil
- 2tsp of Sun flower oil (or favourite oil)
Transfer into a spray or applicator bottle, shake well, apply and massage it into your scalp every other day (or whatever works for you). Make sure to keep it refrigerated for no longer than 1- 2weeks. Make a fresh batch as needed.
The same recipe can be sprayed directly on hair as either a rinse or leave-in. You can also adjust it to your liking. (Add your regular leave-in, cream and oils and style as usual) I use the LCO method but you can use the LOC method if that’s what works best for you.
Other ways I use rice water:
Rice water can be used as a rinse after conditioning, with your conditioner, or added to your cleanser. You can also use it before your deep conditioner by drenching your hair in rice water. Put a plastic cap over it for 15-20. Rinse, then deep condition your hair. That is one of my favorite ways of using it.
SKIN
What you will need:
- ½ a cup of rice water
- ¼ cup Aloe Vera
- A few drops of lemon essential oil or 2tsp of lemon juice
- ¼ cup of rose water
Transfer into a spray bottle shakes well to mix and use as a toner by applying it with a cotton pad. Keep refrigerated for no longer than a week to 2 weeks.
Another way to use rice water as a skincare product is to mix it with your facial cleanser.

MY EXPERIENCE
I started using rice water because I realized how much my hair was shedding and breaking off. I thought what I needed was a protein treatment. That lead me to go out and purchase the Aphogee 3 step method which worked great but it was such a messy process.
With further research, I was led to rice water which works even better. I use the methods mentioned above for hair depending on how lazy I am feeling, to be honest. I apply it directly to my scalp which I’ve noticed made my hair (new growth) even thicker than it already is. But, when I apply it directly to my hair as a leave-in, I realized that my hair sheds less because it felt dry. My solution to that is to deep condition after using rice water. You should be deep conditioning at least once a week anyway or every other week.
Furthermore, listen to your hair and do what works for you.
When it comes to my skin, I’ve noticed fewer blemishes and it keeps the acne at bay. I go through phases when it comes to facial toner. I am currently on my Rosewater, tea tree oil, and Aloe Mixture.

I want to point out that hair growth is measured by your genetic and your overall health. With that said, we still have the option of using different methods to maximize our hair growth. With a consistent routine, fermented rice water can make a difference in our hair care journey.
This method can be used to prevent breakage which keeps us from retaining length, improve your hair’s elasticity, thicken new growth, and can aid in repairing damaged hair.
As with anything in life, your hair and skin will not transform overnight. I believe in the power of consistency and patience! Anything is possible.
